Klarna Bank Account FAQs.

If problems arise during the application process, we suggest the following solutions:

1. Failed verification
Verifying your identity can fail for several reasons:

  • You changed your address and the data is not yet updated

  • You are under the age of 18

Please make sure the information at your other bank is updated and that you use the same data for verification of your Klarna Bank Account.

2. You cannot find your bank in the list of reference banks

Please verify your identity with Videoident instead of KlarnaIdent. That way you do not need any bank information for verification.

The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (“FATCA”) is a U.S. law based on which Germany and the USA entered into an agreement (FATCA-Agreement) on the exchange of tax-relevant data. The purpose of FATCA is to strengthen tax transparency between states in order to prevent tax evasion.

As a result of FATCA, financial institutions, such as Klarna, are obliged to identify those of their customers that are US persons and report certain information about their financial accounts to the tax authorities on a yearly basis.

In case you are a US person and hold a Klarna Bank Account or Klarna Locked Savings, Klarna will report the following information to the Federal Central Tax Office (Bundeszentralamt für Steuern – BZSt) for the purpose of relaying it to the US federal tax authority, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS):

  • Name

  • Address

  • Account number

  • Balances of your account as per year-end

  • Information about interest

  • US tax identification number

Who are reportable persons under FATCA?

Under FATCA, reportable persons are, among others, individuals who are either US citizens (e.g. persons born in the USA or granted citizenship) or US tax residents (e.g. persons who hold a US Green Card or persons who are residing or spending a substantial amount of time in the US).
However, there are a variety of possible factors affecting a person’s tax residency. Klarna cannot advise you on your FATCA classification or US tax status. If you need further support, you should consult a tax professional.

The Common Reporting Standard (“CRS”) is a global standard for the automatic exchange of information on financial accounts and has been transposed into German law by the German Financial Account Information Exchange Act (Finanzkonton-Informationsaustauschgesetz – FKAustG). The purpose of CRS is to strengthen tax transparency between states in order to prevent tax evasion.

As a result of CRS, financial institutions, such as Klarna, are obliged to identify those of their customers with a tax residence in a foreign country and report certain information about their financial accounts to the tax authorities on a yearly basis.

In case you have a foreign tax residency (other than in the US) and hold a Klarna Bank Account or Klarna Locked Savings Account, Klarna will report the following information to the Federal Central Tax Office (Bundeszentralamt für Steuern – BZSt) for the purpose of relaying it to the relevant tax authority the person is a tax resident of:

  • Name

  • Address

  • Account number

  • Balances of your account as per year-end

  • Information about interest

  • Foreign tax identification number

Who are reportable persons under CRS?

Reportable persons for CRS purposes in a Klarna context are persons who are tax residents in a country other than Germany or the US. The tax residency of a person is determined by various factors. In general, tax residency is the country in which you live or spend a substantial amount of your whereabouts.
However, there are a variety of possible factors affecting a person’s tax residency. For more information about tax residency rules in a certain jurisdiction, please visit the OECD Automatic Exchange Portal. Klarna cannot advise you on your tax residency.

If you need further support, you should consult a tax professional.
