Why was my Klarna Credit Card purchase declined?

Why was my Klarna Credit Card purchase declined?

There can be different reasons why your purchase with the Klarna Credit Card was declined. You can immediately see the reason either on the screen of the store's card reader or on the store's website. Additionally, you will receive a push notification with information about why the purchase was declined.

The most common reasons for a declined purchase are:

  • You haven't made a purchase with chip and PIN yet For security reasons, the first purchase with your Klarna Credit Card needs to be made by inserting the card into the card reader and entering your PIN code.
  • You repeatedly entered the wrong PIN If you've entered the wrong PIN too many times your Klarna Credit Card will be temporarily blocked. You can unlock the Klarna Credit Card at an ATM using the correct PIN. You can find your PIN in the app.
  • You've exceeded your spending limit You can check your Purchase Power for the Klarna Credit Card in our app by selecting Estimated available to spend.
  • Your Klarna Credit Card is frozen or blocked You can unlock your frozen card in the Klarna app then try to make the purchase again. If your Klarna Credit Card is completely blocked, you can't use it for any purchases and need to order a new card in our app.

Good to know: Your Klarna Credit Card purchase might also be declined because of the store you tried to purchase at. While Klarna doesn't monitor every store, we generally decline transactions for the following to promote financial wellness and best meet our regulatory, ethical, and risk standards:

  • Utility bills or rent payments
  • Food or delivery services
  • Gift card providers
  • Governmental agencies
  • Medical care
  • Online gaming or gambling
  • Subscription services
  • Selling of drugs or alcohol
