Online flower sales spiked as US shoppers celebrated their mothers.

by Fredrik Thambert

Mothers all across the country got the love and appreciation they deserve on Mother’s Day. The top growing merchant category in Klarna’s shopping app last week was Florists, with an impressive 177 percent growth in sales compared to the week before.

During these difficult times of lockdown and social distancing, it’s more important than ever to show our mothers some love. And what better way to do it than by sending a beautiful flower bouquet? Last week, leading up to Mother’s Day on Sunday, florists saw a huge spike in sales as people were sending their thoughts and gratitude across the nation.

In Klarna’s app, which enables consumers to make a purchase at any online retailer, Florists was the number one category in terms of how much it grew compared to the week before. A plethora of different brands contributed to the category’s record growth of 177 percent in Klarna volume, with some online florists experiencing more than a 200 percent increase in sales through the Klarna app. Many vendors offered tailored Mother’s Day special bouquets and gift baskets with same-day delivery.

Another notable trend was that the Women’s Accessory Stores category was up 12 percent in volume last week, while some mothers were treated (and treated themselves) with luxury goods from a variety of fashionable brands.

In summary, our data shows that even if we’re not able to meet each other the way we’re used to, online shopping services made it possible to keep the love flowing on Mother’s Day.
