Klarna’s Women in Analytics Dinners is an initiative aimed at empowering women in the analytics field at Klarna, fostering an intimate and informal space for discussion, learning, and networking. Today, we’re delighted to share an interview with the driving force behind the initiative, and one of Klarna’s own, Laurence Denisenko.

Hi Laurence!
For those of our readers who have not yet had the opportunity to get to know you, how would you introduce yourself in a tweet (maximum 280 characters)?

Of course, let me give it a go!

I’m Laurence, from Klarna. I am passionate about data-driven decisions and empowering women. I like to blend analytics with creativity, I support our German partners in their global growth.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

As a child, I dreamed of being a journalist. Inspired by Tintin’s adventures, I imagined a life exploring and sharing exciting stories with the world.

What inspired you to work at Klarna?

I joined Klarna seeking innovation and change. After years in traditional banking, Klarna’s fresh approach to finance and tech caught my eye. Klarna’s commitment to revolutionizing shopping and personal finance management coupled with an innovative product suite matched my desire for a dynamic, impactful career.

What do you love most about your job?

What truly excites me is the dynamic nature of my role, where I can turn complex deals into successful partnerships. It’s about bringing together the creativity of our partners, the expertise of our teams, and the strength of our marketing strategies. This synergy not only enhances our presence in Germany but also supports long-term growth and trust with our partners, creating a rewarding and impactful professional experience.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the inception of the Women Analytics Dinners initiative?

The Women Analytics Dinners initiative came from a deep-seated desire to build a supportive and empowering community for women in the analytics field at Klarna. I envisioned a space where experiences, challenges, and successes could be shared openly, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual growth. It’s about creating a platform for learning from both industry leaders and peers, and celebrating the unique contributions of women in analytics.

You are also involved in Klarna’s Women in Analytics mentorship program. For our readers who might not be familiar, could you explain the structure of the mentorship program, including the monthly guest speaker talks?

The mentorship program at Klarna is designed to bridge the gap between experience and aspiration. We pair junior analysts with experienced colleagues who provide guidance and support throughout their career journey. Our monthly talks are a cornerstone of this program, focusing on a range of topics from career development and self-promotion to leadership skills. These sessions are not just about sharing knowledge but also about creating a nurturing environment for personal and professional growth.

Who’s your role model?

My role model is my godmother, Fabienne Machting. A true pioneer in the tech industry, she recognized the potential of technology long before it became mainstream. Her foresight, determination, and success in a field that was just emerging have always been a source of inspiration for me. Her journey reminds me of the power of vision and resilience, qualities I strive to embody in my own career.

Let’s dive back into the Women Analytics Dinners. What is your key aim for these events and what sort of experience can participants expect?

The primary goal of the Women Analytics Dinners is to empower and inspire women in the field of analytics. These events are designed to be more than just networking opportunities; they are a platform for mentorship, knowledge sharing, and collaborative learning. Participants can expect an environment that is both inspiring and supportive, where they can connect with like-minded professionals and industry leaders in a setting that encourages open dialogue and shared experiences.

How do you envision that these dinners may inspire participants and influence their career paths?

My vision for these dinners is to create a ripple effect of inspiration and empowerment. By providing women with the tools, confidence, and support they need, I hope to encourage them to pursue leadership roles, drive innovation, and make impactful contributions in the analytics field. These gatherings are about planting seeds of change and growth, influencing career trajectories in a way that promotes both personal and professional development.

In general, what do you think is most important to support gender diversity within the workforce, and more particularly, within the analytics sector?

Supporting gender diversity in the workforce, especially in analytics, requires a multifaceted approach. It’s about creating an inclusive culture where diverse perspectives are not only welcomed but actively sought and valued. This includes providing equal opportunities for training, mentorship, and career advancement. It’s also about challenging and changing the existing biases and stereotypes, ensuring that women have the same opportunities to succeed and lead as their male counterparts.

Finally, how can people who are excited by this initiative get involved?

Those eager to join our initiative can start by attending our dinners in Berlin, Stockholm, and London. But it’s more than just showing up; we value new ideas, perspectives, and the energy that each individual brings to help this initiative grow and evolve. Whether you’re part of Klarna or not, don’t hesitate to reach out for mentorship or networking opportunities. Engage in conversations, share your experiences, and contribute to the empowering community we’re building. Remember, every interaction, whether it’s a lunch with a senior colleague or a group discussion, can open doors to new insights and career paths in the dynamic world of analytics.

That’s it for this time around! Interested in learning more? Stay tuned, as we will share an update from our first dinner event in the coming week!
