Why was my Klarna Card purchase declined?

There can be different reasons why your purchase with the Klarna Card was declined. You can immediately see the reason either on the screen of the store’s card reader or on the store’s website. Additionally, you will receive a push notification with information about why the purchase was declined.

The most common reasons for a declined purchase are:

  • You haven’t made a purchase with chip and PIN yet
    For security reasons, the first purchase with your Klarna Card needs to be made by inserting the card into the card reader and entering your PIN code.

  • You repeatedly entered the wrong PIN
    If you’ve entered the wrong PIN too many times your Klarna Card will be temporarily blocked. You can unlock the Klarna Card at an ATM using the correct PIN. You can find your PIN in the

  • You’ve exceeded your spending limit
    You can check your Purchase Power for the Klarna Card in our app by selecting Estimated available to spend.

  • Your Klarna Card is frozen or blocked
    You can

    in the Klarna app then try to make the purchase again. If your Klarna Card is completely blocked, you can’t use it for any purchases and need to order a new card in our app.

Good to know: Your Klarna Card purchase might also be declined because of the store you tried to purchase at. While Klarna doesn’t monitor every store, we generally decline transactions for the following to promote financial wellness and best meet our regulatory, ethical, and risk standards:

  • Utility bills or rent payments

  • Food or delivery services

  • Gift card providers

  • Governmental agencies

  • Medical care

  • Online gaming or gambling

  • Rideshare services

  • Subscription services

  • Selling of drugs or alcohol
