Users have shopped at over 25,000 merchants using the Klarna app. The 1 millionth app user is a 53-year-old shopper from regional Victoria

Sydney AUS, September 15, 2021

Klarna, the leading global retail bank, payments, and shopping service, today announces it has surpassed 1 million app downloads in Australia, doubling its downloads since December 2020.  In addition to swiftly reaching consumer milestones, Klarna continues to serve as a growth engine for merchant partners. Australians have shopped at over 25,000 merchants using the Klarna app that allows you to pay in 4 at any store.

The average age of the Klarna shopper is 33, with the current heartland for Klarna growth in Australia being 21-44 year olds, especially young families. Most Klarna shoppers live in Sydney (23%), Melbourne (20%) and Brisbane (12%) and Perth (7%). Over a third use Klarna every month (33%), while 30% use it every few months. 10% use it weekly. People shop with Klarna for a wide variety of goods, from clothing and accessories (28%) to electronics (16%), beauty products (16%) or furniture (14%).

Klarna identified the 1 millionth app user and talked to her about her shopping habits and the experience with the app. Jacqui is 53, lives in Regional Victoria and does most of her shopping online. She describes herself as a determined shopper, knowing exactly what she wants and always looking to get the best price and the fastest shipping. Her favourite thing about shopping with Klarna is that she can use the one-time card for all online purchases and favourites such as Amazon, where other flexible shopping services are not available. She has already used Klarna to shop for electronics but also for more basic items, such as shelf clips from Bunnings.

“I really love using Klarna - for me, I much prefer it to having a credit card. I have more flexibility around purchases and I can create and save all the items I want in a collection in the app which I can share with anyone. The thing I like most is that I'm immediately notified whenever there’s a price drop on one of my saved items. Another plus is being able to manage all my payments in the app. It really helps me be in control when it comes to spending and budgeting properly!” - Jacqui, 53, Regional Victoria.

Camilla Giesecke, Chief Expansion Officer at Klarna comments on this milestone: “As we see more consumers moving away from traditional forms of credit towards transparent and innovative, interest-free payment options, our goal is to deliver the best shopping experience for consumers, giving them more flexibility and control, better deals, and more value out of their purchases, and to do so responsibly, by encouraging consumers to carefully manage their finances and being mindful when they shop.”

In terms of top reasons for using Klarna, almost 19% of respondents to a recent Klarna consumer survey* say they mainly want to spread the cost for something more expensive. 16% appreciate most that Klarna doesn’t charge interest or fees when paid on time. 82% of shoppers are likely and very likely to recommend Klarna to a friend or family member.

After successfully reshaping how people shop in the US and Europe, Klarna launched in Australia in 2020 with the mission to become Australians’ favourite way to shop, by empowering people to shop and pay smarter, in a way that gives them more flexibility, convenience and control, with no interest or fees when paid on time.

Klarna provides an end-to-end shopping experience that helps consumers find the best value with the flexibility of paying in 4 at any store. Additional smart app features include price drop notifications, exclusive deals and shareable shopping collections, allowing customers to follow and share collections curated by brands, influencers, and Klarna’s shopping experts. Additionally, Rewards Club, the company’s loyalty program, allows users to earn vibes to unlock gift cards, Flybuys points, and other perks. The Club now has over 120,000 members in Australia since it launched in January 2020.

Most recently, Klarna announced a global partnership with the YOOX Net-A-Porter Group and has signed a number of high-profile Australian brands, such as Cotton On Group, or Kogan. The latest brands to partner with Klarna include Tony Bianco, Camilla, Alice McCall, Lee Matthews, Spell & the Gypsy, Bec & Bridge, Jac + Jack, Nimble Activewear, Digi Direct, Flora & Fauna, Kirstin Ash, Ryderwear, Step One, Anna Quan, Ella Bache, and Aje.
