Meet Violet Chachki – the winner of Season 7 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Violet’s a “look-queen,” through-and-through, adorning stunning custom pieces, shocking audiences with a clear and unique vision (hello flesh-crown) and is known for her impossibly cinched waist. For International Drag Day, we had a quick little kiki with the Queen who pulls aesthetic inspiration from pin-up babes of yesteryear.
Are you able to break down your drag journey – from baby to International superstar?
I was always inspired by glamour and fashion. I went to a catholic school with gender-specific uniforms so that made me question gender roles as it relates to fashion at an early age. drag was my escape, my rebellion, and my creative outlet. I got to express a side of me that felt repressed. It really started on Halloween at age 17 and snowballed from there. I started performing at 19 and got addicted to the feeling of freedom. I worked my way up in the local competitive Atlanta drag scene. I auditioned for drag race twice, got on the second time, and won. From there the work truly began. Proving myself to be the drag superstar that I am today.
OK – be honest, have you ever used Klarna and if so: what did you buy?
Yes! I’ve gotten makeup from Sephora and some lovely vintage pieces from Etsy, even a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes!
What is your favorite article of clothing you own and why?
It’s so hard to pick just one! I would say my corset collection in total is my favorite, they’re all so unique and specially made for me.
You’re stuck on a deserted island and still have to put on a show each night – which items are essential to get through your shows?
A red lipstick and a pair of heels!
What advice do you have for those looking to elevate their drag game?
Try to do something that’s never been done before. Have a clear vision and execute it. Confidence! Practice! Own your mistakes!
If you weren’t a Queen, what would you be?
I would be a fashion designer.
What’s next for Violet Chachki?
I have my touring show coming up A Lot More Me you can get tickets at violetchachki.com!
